Default Starter question

Original starter is discontinued by GM up here in Canada. My question is can a rebuilt/jobber do the job. I've heard some people say that since the started is placed mid-engine and is exposed to high heat, rebuilt starters could be problematic. Any comments or suggestions?

Thanks,
Steve

Well Ive been running my $79 rebuilt starter off Ebay for 2.5 years now in Arizona daily. So I have to say it depends on the feedback rating of the rebuilder.

Your starter can be "repaired" on "the bench" by any competent "starter/alternator" facility. Rebuilt "implies" many things that sometimes don't happen! If yours is a "hot start" solution or an attempt at a repair to eliminate a "hot start" the "solenoid contacts" in the Nippondenso starter is is it's generally considered "weak point"! Not just the LT5 application but most Nippondenso applications. A more substantial "solenoid contact" package is a $10-part (in quanity substantially less). That package and the replacement of the "plunger" maybe another $10 should accomplish "the fix"!!

I'd ask a compentent local shop to see if they agree! The "contact, brushes and a plunger" maybe less than $50 on "the bench" and no shipping.

I've spoken to a couple local "rebuilders" and they feel the same regarding the Nippendenso product. Those parts and 12V at the starter and it "will" crank!! 12V nothing less!!

*I didn't see the other "no start" thread until after I'd commented here! The contacts, plunger, brushes and 12V is "the fix"!! This isn't a "fix" for all "no starts" but a good fix for a "hot no start"!!

I'd visit a "local builder" for the parts. They'll use and have the "heavy duty" parts. Here's a link to a "typical Nippendenso" build!!

http://www.nationsautoelectric.com/Nippondenso.html

Here's a "small parts list"! for the 1998585 LT5 starter! A "local builder" can ID from this information. Click on the part# for image!

http://www.wai-wetherill.com/product...O&item=1998585

You can click on "vehicle look-up" on that page to access complete information for "most" electrical including our alternators. I didn't include a direct link because there are "two applications" I believe '90 and '91+! Take a look!!
