Re: CAN'T PASS CALIF. SMOG, IDEAS/HELP!!!!

Two options for overcoming the problem with plugging in the O2 sensor on the right side:

1. Make or buy an extension, pull the existing sensor wire out at the rt front side of engine, plug the...

Re: CAN'T PASS CALIF. SMOG, IDEAS/HELP!!!!

You should be able to pass the idle and 2500 rpm tests. If your HC,s are high that is an indication of a rich mixture or bad cats. If the cats are bad, both HC and NOX will be high. Post up all...

Re: Catch can did it's job!!

The major contributor to the oil in the pcv system in a healthy lt5 is high rpm runs, it pressurizes the cranckcase, the catchcan seperates the oil being blown into the pcv system.

Re: Finally passed Ca smog, what a pain in the @$$!

When you change chips or programming you have to run the vehicle long enough to let the computer adjust the mixture to stoichemetric. Did you run it long enough after installing the stock chip?

Re: Passed CA Emissions

Stock chip with stock timing should bring your NOX down enough to pass.

Re: Oil in injector housing?

For anyone doing a catch can - if the can does not turn the airflow a couple times, plus use a filtering material, it probably won't get all the oil out. On my can the air comes in the side of the...

Re: Passed CA Emissions

Hans,

Great news on passing, I think that as long as your engine is in good running order w/good factory cats, you will pass.

Re: Passed CA Emissions

Also, if the tech was having a hard time maintaining rpm, make sure the heater/ac control is set to off for the test. If it is on, the compressor can cycle on/off and the load change makes it very...

Re: Passed CA Emissions

Change the chip back to stock, if that doesnt work, take out a couple more degrees timing advance in the testing rpm range. Like previously posted, dont use octane booster. running octane booster...

Re: Passed CA Emissions

In response to the inquiry about NOX and temperature, its true higher "combustion" temps will increase NOX, but thermowrapping promotes higher exhaust system temps, including raising the temp in the...

Re: Turn signal switch R and R

Don,

Here is a pretty good explanation/pictures of what you are trying to do. It goes further into dissassembly of steering column, just stop at the turn signal part and reassemble.

Re: VA emissions tuning

As a note, when I was trying to pass CA emissions most recommendations were to do full throttle time to get the cats hot and burn out deposits. I found that if you don,t have an effective oil catch...

Re: VA emissions tuning

I tried hot wiring the AIR inj pump on my 90. When first started the O2 sensors showed a way lean condition (air being pumped past sensors), NOX went down, then the computer dumped fuel in to correct...

Re: VA emissions tuning

The following got me through CA emissions, don't know if this will apply to the big cams, but this will help emissions on most engines:

Reduce stock spark tables 2 to 6 degrees (mine worked best...

Re: Catalytic Conveter Failure?

Jerry,

I've had two cat failures since 2006. The first failure was with factory cats in 2006, replaced w/aftermarket. In Aug 2010 I could not pass CA emissions testing and found the rt side cat...

Re: Oil in injector housing?

My ebay catch can was not removing all the oil coming through the pcv system as evidenced by oil traces in the hose at the connection to the plenum. I bought a water seperator for air compressors...

Re: Knowledgeable Tech -Starting/Performance problem needing assistance

If the 11 in "vacume" you referenced is the MAP sensor reading at idle, that is normal, something around 18+ in of idle vacume.

Re: Knowledgeable Tech -Starting/Performance problem needing assistance

Idle vacume should be 18 - 20 in, inj pw at idle should be around 4 ms, idle fp should be around 46, 39 is definitely low.

Re: Replacing Ignition/Steering Column Key Switch...

I just replaced the key lock cylinder in my 90 Z. The push button on the lock cylinder is there to make it more difficult to inadvertantly move the key to the lock (as in steering wheel lock)...

Re: Little White hose Clip thingy

I believe that is a clip for the vacume line that goes to the charcoal canister for the fuel tank vapor recovery system on the later model LT5's. On the 90 that line comes out behind the A/C...

Re: VATS Gothcha's

Oh, by the way, I also found the info posted by ZR1Vette and did the installation of resisters in the key lock cylinder circuit to eliminate any future chance of a failure.

Re: VATS Gothcha's

My oringinal key lock cylinder was apparently not reading the resister in the key, when I ohmed the circuit, I got infinite ohms at the first connector after the key lock cylinder - should have read...
