C4 ZR-1- "Unsung Hero"

I'd also consider the 84 Xfire in a similar fashion. In many ways that first C4 was a groundbreaking car for Corvette. Certainly from the standpoint of not being a joke in the rest of the sports car world. I remember first seeing it at a dealership in Portland Oregon. I waited 9 months for one of the first 4+3 cars. It was a beautiful shape, not overdone like the C3. The form
was well integrated. The digital dash was a blast when viewed at night. Gauge switches for multi-display instrumentation, 7speed trans, 16" wheels w 9.5" unidirectional tires. WOW! Then the much maligned Z51 with 2.5:1 steering, which I had, but it had grip. Sport seats in cloth! 3200lbs wet!
Others think of the 84 as the Rodney Dangerfield of Vettes. Although, somewhat hypocritically, they fawn all over the 82 and the same motor!!!????
But the 84 would destroy an 82 on the road course.

I ordered my 84 4+3 Z51 in the spring of 83 (April I think...) and waited 10-11 months for delivery. I never got so much attention for about a year. However, in the summer w/ the AC on rpm would fluctuate to almost a stall and the car would shudder and sound pretty bad. With the top off any good size pothole would shift the steering column a good 1/2 an inch left to right. It took a 91 ZR-1 to mend my distrust for C4s.

No question the 84 wasn't "completely baked" when it came out. Last time I bought first model year of a GM or any brand. But I don't think that detracts from the importance and the break from previous generations the 84 signifies for Corvette brand. After 24 years, it became anmuch more enjoyable car to drive with C5 brakes, ZF6 trans, D44@3.45, 17" GS wheels, and about 350hp.
It should have come from Chevrolet that way and I guess ultimately it did.

I had an 84 for 20 years and loved the car, would like to find another one at some point. Its just a shame the early cars were built with such garbage parts. The uninformed think the 84 is the only C4 built with these parts but its actually 84-87.Paint,steering racks, window regs on most. The list goes on.I thought that after buying my Z I would get motivated to work on the 84,it didn't happen.I couldn't see letting the car rot under a cover so I sold it.[IMG][/IMG][IMG][/IMG]

I think the hot setup, and something I seriously contemplated before the ZR, was converting the 84 to LSx power. The ZF trans mating to the LS was the obstacle at the time(at least the primary issue IMO)

Changing the CF setup would have takin away the identity of the car so I didnt want to do that but the motor definitely needed something to wake it up.From what I understand there is a new intake manifold on the market, that with a set of reworked throttle bodies and some motor work would get the job done.
