Imagine how much easier it would have been to remove and replace the transmission, clutch , etc had the GM engineers put a removable plate that would open up the shifter area another 4-6 inches(lengthwise)...

Hell yeah. If the shifter were easy to remove, like the T56, then it would be a moot point. But, nobody wants to remove a ZF shifter to drop the trans.
