Hi, I have a related question. Concerning the rear hatch seal/weather stripping, is it supposed to be one piece, or two? On my 1991 ZR-1, where the top seal comes down to meet the horizontal seal, it is separated on both sides, and is "shrinking" apart, leaving a gap for water intrusion. The seal itself is in pretty good shape and I have thought about gluing the corners together on each side. They do meet at a nice 45 degree angle.

Appreciate your replies!

John

It is supposed to be one piece all the way around, Vette's are notorious at least C-4's for having the weatherstripping split at the seams on both corners

Regarding the hatch seal coming apart at the corner, I used to use a special, flexible cement to build my custom wet-suits, back in the day. I have to think that stuff might do the trick, as the hatch rubber (to me) seems to be about the same consistency as wet suit material. Hey! Worth a try, and a helluva lot cheaper than replacing it if it works. If it doesn't, you're only out $5 or so.

I've got the problem too (split apart at the corner). If I get some glue and try it before y'all do, I'll let ya know how it works!

I took a similar path to solve the splitting hatch seal issue. You can use the 3M weatherstrip glue and seal the corners once or twice, but it always pulls apart in a short time due to the arcing motion of the hatch trying to pull it apart.

My solution was to use the expensive high density black RTV to more permanently bond the corners. I have done this twice. The first time was on my beater LT1 car on which I wasn't too careful about doing a neat job (but that's the one I took photos of). My 91 ZR came out a little cleaner.

Basically you glue the corner from all sides and then spray mold release or PTFE like spray on some saran wrap. Lay the wrap over the glued joint and then close the hatch glass over it. Let it cure for 12 hours and then peel away the saran wrap. Newspaper plastic sleeves also work great for this.

anyways, maybe pics later- they block photobucket at work...

Robert , Keen Parts had some weatherstriping at BG a few year's back. One sample was regular weatherstrip stuff. The other was some real nice material. Now the fit I have no idea.

Ive used and sold Corvette-rubber for years and it is the BEST and lowest priced weatherstrip on the market.

I can't understand for the life of me why these guys aren't marketing this more, the quality is leaps and bounds over all the other aftermarket sellers.

They are the OEM style latex ones too, you will not be dissapointed.

As to the corners on the hatch seal splitting, I still have my original seals and when they split a few years back I cut an L shaped piece of rubber about an inch and a half long on each end and inserted it in the open ends pulling them back together and glued it in the corners.
