I have owned an 84z51 and a 94zr1 both had the same problems as you are describing, fixing it is only temporary... they all eventually wont work. The system is CRAP and that is being nice about it....
I was given excellent advise on this regard not to long ago.
RIP IT OUT AND BURN IT.
If you ever really want reliable sound in ANY C4 you just have to replace it,... there is no way around it. and its much cheaper than fixing it every year.

I helped my freind do that to his, luckily I never even use my stereo so it doesnt bother me... i feel to disconnected from the vehicle when I cant hear her.
